According to the Environmental
Protection Agency or the EPA, mold will
not cause any significant health problems until
you see the mold stain on damp or wet spots growing.
Besides growing on other places, mold even grows
in the attic and EPA recommends certain ways for
its mold
remediation.
If there is no need for replacing the attic insulation,
you need to be sure that the attic has undergone
proper sealing using plastic foil. EPA recommends
that you fold this foil and seal its contents,
after the removal of contaminated decks.
EPA also recommends that the maximum area, which
non-professionals may treat is 10 X 10.
If the attic you deal with is a small area, then
it is advisable that you do not use bleach or
other disinfectants for killing mold, since they
hardly kill all the spores.
A best way for killing attic mold
is by removing it completely from that surface
on which it is growing. EPA recommendations on
attic mold
remediation are four methods, specifically
for a 10 square feet area. Those four methods
are as below.
Methods:
1. You may use any wet vacuum
for cleaning the surface. Make sure the vacuum
allows filling its tank half or partially along
with water, so that mold residue suppresses or
is away from the contaminated surface.
2. Use a rag or damp sponge for wiping the surface.
Moreover, use wood cleaner or clean water.
3. On completely dried surfaces, make use of
High Efficiency Particulate Air (HEPA)
vacuum cleaner. Dispose all those contents in
plastic bags. Ensure the plastic bags are properly
sealed.
4. Remove, seal and then dispose of all the contaminated
material as regular waste. You need to remove
contaminated floor insulation from the attic.
Use plastic foil for covering the insulation.
Once the cleaning work is over, fold the plastic
foil by sealing all its contents.
